DUBAI – Global cryptocurrency exchange Binance has confirmed it is dealing with a major cybersecurity incident that has affected approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets, making it one of the largest crypto security breaches ever reported. According to the company, its initial investigation suggests the attack may have originated from a compromised laptop belonging to a DevOps engineer. The breach allegedly allowed attackers to gain unauthorized access to a service container and initiate unauthorized withdrawal transactions. Despite the scale of the incident, Binance stated that there is currently no evidence of any wallet private key leak, a critical factor in protecting customer funds and maintaining platform security. The exchange reported that nearly $3 billion in affected assets have already been frozen with the assistance of blockchain partners, security firms, and law enforcement agencies. Investigators continue to trace the remaining funds across multiple blockchain networks. As a precautionary measure, Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals while conducting extensive security checks. Deposits, however, continue to operate normally, according to the company. In an official statement, the exchange assured users that all losses resulting from the breach will be fully covered through its Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) and corporate reserves. The company reiterated that customer funds remain protected. Cybersecurity experts have described the attack as highly sophisticated and potentially involving multiple points of entry rather than a single compromised device. Reports have also linked the attack to a group believed to have connections with North Korean cyber operations, although investigations remain ongoing. The incident has sent shockwaves through the cryptocurrency industry, renewing concerns about exchange security and risk management. Investors are now awaiting a full technical report from Binance, which has promised to release a detailed post-mortem once its investigation is complete.
