Latvia has introduced significant changes to its Temporary Residence Permit (TRP) system. Under the new rules, TRPs will now be granted only for the validity period of the residence card rather than the previous standard five-year period. In addition, the annual residence card registration requirement has been removed. These changes mean that many foreign nationals may need to apply for residence permit extensions more frequently, potentially increasing administrative procedures and processing requirements for long-term residents. Residence-by-Investment Program Reforms Latvia has also restructured its residence-by-investment program. Two investment pathways have been discontinued: Real estate investment route Bank investment route Existing permits issued through these programs will remain valid until their expiration dates. Current permit holders and eligible family members may still be able to extend their permits for an additional five years under transitional arrangements. New Golden Visa Route Introduced A new residence option has been created for individuals who invest at least €150,000 in a government-established investment fund for a minimum of five years. Eligible applicants may receive a five-year Temporary Residence Permit. Changes to Company Investment Route The existing business investment pathway remains available. However, residence permits issued under this route will now be valid for two years instead of five years, reducing the duration previously available to investors. Self-Employment Residence Route Removed Latvia has abolished residence permit categories based on: Self-employment Individual merchant activity As a result, existing permits under these categories cannot be renewed. Individuals seeking to remain in Latvia may need to consider alternative immigration options, such as startup founder programs or other qualifying residence routes. What This Means The reforms represent a more restrictive approach to Latvia's immigration and investment residency framework. Several established residence pathways have been eliminated, while remaining options have become more limited. Although a new investment-based route has been introduced, investors and foreign nationals now have fewer choices when seeking long-term residence opportunities in Latvia. 🌐 Source: www.turkeuro.com 🇱🇻 Latvia News 🤖 AI-Powered Global News Coverage
